  1. Mystaia says:

    Hmmm… I really think he should have said “terrorists” rather than “freedom fighters”. That’s usually how the opposition of “freedom fighters” sees them. I mean, even the anti-apartheid group that Nelson Mandela was part of was considered a terrorist group for a long long time. Then again, the General (or whatever rank he is) seems nice, maybe he’s trying to send a message to the pilots when he says “freedom fighters”?

    Hm, I always thought ‘freedom fighter’ was another way of saying ‘terrorist.’ I didn’t really know that there was all that much of a difference between the two.

    Though it does make sense for Earth’s government to make them sound as despicable as possible. Duly noted for future works.

  3. Gillsing says:

    The difference would be that “freedom fighter” suggests that there is freedom to be fought for, and that the enemy therefore are oppressors. If you are the enemy, you tend not to want to acknowledge that you might be oppressing people. Then again, in the distant future, who knows how society might have changed? The long term trend seems to be toward a more civilized, less violent society, but perhaps that could change quickly in the face of enemies, making oppression a virtue rather than a sin.

    “Freedom Fighters.” hmm, I dunno. When I read it I thought he was being sarcastic.

    Plus I searched freedom fighter on thesaurus.com and it said

    Synonyms: commando, freedom fighter, irregular, mercenary, professional soldier, resistance fighter, soldier of fortune, terrorist, underground fighter.

    Personally I think it works still.

    ^ That’s exactly what I did when I wrote the script, lol. I honestly thought it had the same meaning, and didn’t want to risk sounding redundant by always referring to the Resistance as terrorists time and time again.

    However, seeing as this is causing some confusion I could just edit the text. I’ll probably do it some time this weekend.

    @Omega Man

    But if you search dictionary.com you get:

    freedom fighter
    –noun
    a fighter for freedom, esp. a person who battles against established forces of tyranny and dictatorship.

    Thesaurus works, but it does give words with similar, not identical meaning.
    For example some of the synonyms for landmark are: battleground, hill, museum, ruins, tree. They may all be landmarks, but they don’t all have the same meaning.

    @Holly
    What about bandits? Criminals? Uhm… rebels? Bombers?

    They MEAN the same, but freedom fighters implies that tjhey are in the right-though if he was being sarcastic it works fine, just hard to read tone of voice. :p

  8. Wil K. says:

    I simply took it to be semi-sarcastic. It seemed to give intonation to his speech, which was nice.

    First panel. Should it be “Earth’s jurisdiction” and not “Earth jurisdtiction”?

  11. SteveF says:

    First frame, it should be “every day” (two words, meaning something is occurring every 24-hr period) not “everyday” (common, ordinary).
